My oldest and I have overlapping intolerances, among them dairy. That didn't stop us from occassionally pushing it, particularly with dairy. A decade ago, she agreed with my assessment that caramel flan was delicious regret.
Sadly, something they don't tell you about maturity is that at a certain point, you don't want the things that aren't good for you. If you're suffering from addiction, that's different--you crave them even when you don't want them--but for things like sugar, dairy, or anything else that might hurt you, eventually you stop thinking with your tongue and start thinking with your stomach. Or, even worse, your tongue starts thinking with your stomach.
All to say that the cupcakes I tripped over myself to make yesterday bothered me as soon as I ate them, bothered me when I woke up this morning, and bothered me all over again when I hazarded another two bites this morning. I feel bad. I don't mean "I feel bad about myself"; I mean, I feel bad. And a weird form of empty, which is something that happens more and more when I eat erstatz food.
My birthday is at the end of August, and I'm looking forward to making myself a nice cream cake. There is no way that I could have convinced my family to have eaten it yesterday, but their loss!
Excuse me while I go eat some real food.
